Public space is where people meet, differences are encountered, and dialogue can emerge. But public space is also a place where older women in particular are often invisible. Western culture cultivates a narrow concept of beauty that places youth above age. This is especially true of media representations of women, where we are often confronted with unattainable beauty ideals. On top of this come the cultural narratives that position older women as less appealing, both sexually and professionally.
In HOMAGE TO OLDER WOMEN 100 women artists from Scandinavia of all ages have been invited to express their personal view of older women and this particular stage of life. Their individual works of art are exhibited on billboards on train platforms in and around Copenhagen as an alternative to the images of women in commercial advertisements. The project pays tribute to the wrinkles, wisdom and life experiences of older women, creating a visual realm of recognition and respect.
It is 20 years since Danish artist Hanne Lise Thomsen made her first billboard project WOMAN 2003 in Copenhagen with works by 100 women artists from Scandinavia. To mark the occasion and continue the pioneering work it initiated HOMAGE TO OLDER continues to develop old and new networks and connections between women artists in the region. Through its key mission of providing a new and diverse view of older women the project aims to create a sense of community and solidarity across generations. The billboard project is the concept and initiative of Danish artist Hanne Lise Thomsen developed and produced in collaboration with Danish curator Lise Grüner Bertelsen.
